Our laboratory investigates how interactions between the gut microbiota and the host regulate nutrition, metabolism, immunity, and behavior. In particular, we aim to understand how physiological and environmental changes—including nutritional status, aging, and infection—reshape the gut microbial ecosystem and intestinal physiology, and how these changes, in turn, influence host health and disease.
Using Drosophila melanogaster as our primary model organism, we combine genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, imaging, and behavioral analyses to address these questions. Our major research areas include microbiome–host interactions in response to nutritional status, aging-associated dysbiosis, metabolic and immune responses of the intestinal epithelium, the biological functions of microbial metabolites, and gut–brain communication.
Ultimately, our goal is to uncover fundamental biological principles governing the microbiome–gut axis and to extend these discoveries toward a better understanding of human health and disease.
